The Star in the Eye

It shone so bright,

And every night

When my mother came

And kissed my head.

I wondered if the star would shed;

It never did!

Her sleeves it hid;

Then when I grew

Well almost so

I heard her song

A muffled one

I urged her so

To let it out;

I saw the star

Shine yet again

She smiled and light

Spread on the night

With rainbow bright

And a splendid rain.

But I felt a pain

For the star reflected

Of a scar affected

And a life neglected;

Then I hid my face

In her sleeve this time.

The song I heard!

It passed through

Her soul to mine,

And my eyes shone

With a brighter star.
